slideshow: Latinos you didn't know were vegetarian
Christian Serratos
Christian posed naked for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in an ad that read: "I'd rather GO NAKED than wear FUR."
Zack de la Rocha
"Inside me, I think that an animal goes through a lot of pain in the whole cycle of death in the slaughterhouse; just living to be killed. That whole situation is really messed up for animals, growing up in those little cooped-up pens. I just don't think its worth eating that animal. I think animals should be free. There's so much other food out there that doesn't have to involve you in that cycle of pain and death."
Penélope Cruz
Penélope became a vegetarian in 1998, after filming All the Pretty Horses, where animals played a prominent role.
Gabe Saporta/Cobra Starship
"I was super young when I became a vegetarian. I was 13...[A kid] said to me, 'You know man, there are so many other options than to eat meat. There's so many other ways to live, you don't need to eat meat. Why would you kill another living thing?' That just made so much sense to me at the age of 13. It just struck such a chord, that I was like, yeah, of course, why would I kill another living thing so that I could eat? I became a vegetarian in an instant."
Constance Marie
Constance became a vegetarian in stages beginning at 16. "I believe a nutritional balanced vegetarian will live a longer healthier life."
Bobby Soto
"I do not eat red meat. I have not eaten red meat for the past two years. The reason for this is that my grandfather had worked in a slaughter house and he told me the stories of how animals were killed to serve us humans. It makes sense that we would want meat to eat, but I decided from then on that I would not partake in eating red meat."
Vida Guerra
"I feel really healthy, and it works on so many different levels, including the condition of my skin."
Edward James Olmos
Edward James only eats fish and became a vegetarian in part because his father, four of his uncles and two of his aunts died from diabetes complications. He's a spokesperson for the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and the Diabetic Foot Conference.
Natalia Villaveces
Villaveces, a vegan, posed in her finest "veggie couture" for a PETA ad. "Latinos have this obsession with everything fried, with a lot of animal protein, and, yeah, it's true—we have a lot of problems with obesity, we have a lot of problems with diabetes, we have a lot of problems with asthma. We have a lot of problems with a lot of things that come from it."
