beautiful and talented: Adrienne Bailon on her near career as a doctor, her Latina firsts and her regrets
When you were young, you attended a high school focused on health care careers. What were you interested in doing before your group 3LW took off?
I really wanted to be an Obstetrician! I wanted to bring babies into the world and our school had us do an internship at Beth Israel where a producer walked in and scouted me for the group 3LW!
How did you get your start in music and what convinced you to pursue it full time?
I've always wanted to be a professional singer, actress, and entrepreneur but coming from very humble beginnings in the projects of the Lower East Side and not having any "Hollywood" connections... It did not seem realistic. I sang in church, acted in all the church and school plays... So when the opportunity came to join a girl group I was ready!
How will your solo album be different than your previous records?
My solo album is going to be very personal... Things I have experienced. It also will have a bit more Latin Soul to it!
What advice do you have for young Latinas who would like to pursue music?
Put yourself out there! From youtube sensations to American Idol... People are always looking for new talent! Also create a look and a sound that's unique. One of a kind... Create a lane for yourself.
What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
I really am proud of the work I did with the Cheetah Girl's! Being able to be the first Spanish speaking Latina on Disney Channel, the first to host Hispanic Heritage month on The Disney Channel, and just being able to represent as a positive latina that young latin girls could relate to... Meant so much to me!
Your biggest regret?
I try not to have regrets but to have learning experiences and not allow them to happen again.
What in your opinion, will be the biggest issue of the 2012 presidential election?
I'm totally biased. I am a Barack Obama supporter all the way! He will definitely have my vote and I believe he has done an amazing job as President considering the mess he walked into.
What are your thoughts on a federal DREAM Act?
I believe in the DREAM act... I believe that children brought here that are Aliens still deserve educations... They are not even of age to decide where they are living etc.
What’s more important: to understand or to be understood?
To understand.
