Mexican-American births are driving the growth of U.S. Latinos
The Latino population in the U.S. is surging, but according to a new study, it's not because of immigration.
A Latino baby boom is responsible for the growth, especially among Mexican-Americans, who make up 63% of the U.S. Latino population.
Between 2000-2010, the Mexican-American population grew by 7.2 million babies, and 4.2 million immigrants. Mexican migration to the U.S. has declined in recent years for a number of reasons.
One of the major factors driving this shift is age: Mexican-Americans are younger than other groups in the U.S., with a median age of 25 compared to 35 for other groups.
