  • Maria Susana Flores Gamez, a 20-year-old beauty queen from Sinaloa, Mexico, was killed in her hometown after a shootout between troops and "suspected criminals." Sinaloa State Attorney General Marco Antonio Higuera: "All we know is that it happened during a confrontation that the army had with criminals, and that she was with the group of criminals."

  • Countries that use more high fructose corn syrup (the sweetener found in products like soda) have a higher rate of type 2 diabetes, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Professor Michael Goran of USC: "There's lots of other different factors contributing to global diabetes. We're just saying that high fructose corn syrup is one."
