  • The number of children born to unmarried parents has tripled since 1985, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Part of the increase is attributed to couples who are having babies while living together. More than 50 percent of first children born to Hispanic parents were born outside of marriage, compared to black parents (more than 80 percent) and white parents (more than 30 percent).
