Angola's Leila Lopes
was crowned Miss Universe Monday night, beating out 88 other contestants from around the world. Lopes, 25, was praised for the way she answered a judge's final question about physical beauty: "Thank God I'm very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn't change a thing. I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life." This is Angola's first Miss Universe win.
Retired baseball star Manny Ramirez was
arrested and charged with domestic battery after allegedly slapping his wife during an argument. Ramirez, who was released on $2,500 bail, denied hitting his wife.

The National Council of La Raza, a prominent national Latino advocacy group, has
called off its boycott of Arizona, which was launched last year after the state passed harsh immigration bill, SB1070. The group says the boycott succeeded in shifting the state's direction on immigration. The bill remains stuck in the courts and has not been implemented as law. The boycott has cost Arizona
about $500 million in lost revenue from canceled conventions, lost tax revenues and lower economic output.

The number of people living in poverty in the U.S. rose for the fourth year in a row, to 46.2 million. The
number of Americans living in poverty is now 1 in 6, the biggest number in nearly 20 years. Hispanics and African Americans are worse off, with more than 1 in 4 people living in poverty. Young people have seen the largest decrease in their wages.
